Examination Result.
Here is the reflection I wrote based on my own experience as a student.
The examination results are about to be announced and I remember being petrified of exams, even more petrified of the results. The red lines on my report card were demeaning, disheartening, and most discouraging. How could I face my friends and family? Shame! Broken self-esteem.
As a student, I always facing the coldness fear of exams and results. In fact, when it comes to examination season, I still wake up with the shivers after a nightmare about going blank in front of a question paper with time running out. Why am I always having this feeling although I have had memorized every single definitions, steps and contents of the subjects?
Back in 2011, after completed lower secondary school level, I was officially a pure science stream student because I seemed to perform in my Science Subjects. Afterward, Biology, Physic, Chemistry, Additional Mathematics were all the core subjects I was taking. The fun was everywhere as I had a lot of friends, even good teachers. Exam season came and I was studying the whole night; highlighting keywords, writting notes, mindmapping, silenced phone notifications and etc. (You can tell how stressful I was duhh) The result came out but I seemingly couldn't did well in my science subjects. Tired of failure, I came to my counselor for some advice.
Her first question was, "Do you enjoy studying Biology? or Chemistry, perhaps? How about Add-Math?". Asked by her, I was totally blank, not only because I couldn't answer her question, but also because I was in total confusion. Questions started lingering in my mind, "What am I doing in this class?", "I studied but I failed", "Where do I belong?". The biggest confusion was not because I was "misfit" back in the day. It was actually because I was just a 'copy and paste robotic human being' whom memorizing every single definition but seemingly couldn't applied the answer to the question asked on exam papers. ENJOY. LOVE. EMBRACE. These are three keywords on how to 'avoid failure' in exams.
We student are so scared of exams and results because folks once told us, "If you couldn't excel in your studies, you could never get hire." , "If you do not excel in your science subjects, you cannot be a doctor, engineer or pilot" or sometimes you might have encountered with something like, "Be a doctor, then you will have a good life in future." A most typical statement reviewed especially living in an economy-based and industrial-based country. LIFE IS A RACE. Everybody will only focusing on the first winner; Have you ever thought who's the second man that make it to the moon after Neil Armstrong? I bet only few of people knew, thanks to Google, but ironically, the name was never announced on visual media. WHY? Because it doesn't matter. Everything is about ranking. As in school, first class will always be the school representers, whilst the other classes would ended up yawning during school assembly, without having any ideas when was the debate competition being held, listening to congratulation speech of headmaster toward the Debate Team School Representers.
I am not saying that academic is not important. Indeed, it is important, but friends, don’t be afraid. Just chill. Don’t look upon the result board as a milestone in your life, it’s just another stone with many miles on it! We have a long way to go and many more important exams to face. Not the school or universities exams, but the exams of life. And those are the ones to be prepared for. The mark sheets to look out for are not the ones printed on some paper, but the ones on the faces of the people you love. Those are the mark sheets that matter. Bring a smile on the face of your mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter, friend, and you have done well in the exam of life.
I remember I always be that one person who always hiding my bad results form my father. He would complaint and tell that he had never failed in Science or something and he would say "If this is how your result always are, I can't see a brighter side of your future" Academic performance was always a big one for him. It always bothered him that I had done badly. Of course, they're my parents, and being a parents they always wanted the best for me; no mistakes in a very possible way. But parents, they might be your kids, but they are not YOU, which means they can't be your new - self in future. Parents, the moment when SPM result will be out, I wish each of you remember that you need to accept your children as they are. Your child might fail, or get average marks, or might miss by half a percent the result that you may desire, either way, I want you to accept him/her as he/she is. Is the mark sheet more important or is your child more important?
Do not be disappointed with one exam. Life has so much to offer. Each one of us is special. And for each one of us to do well in life we need the encouragement and support of the people who love us, especially our parents. REMEMBER THE MARK SHEET OF LIFE. And this mark sheet has only 3 subjects – love, caring and happiness. Fame, success and money are calculated on some other mark sheet, and they cannot compete with the value of love, caring and happiness. So why don't you, as parents, not to fail in the exam of life. Remember our face is also a mark sheet, as is the face of our beloved child. Let us see really high scores on each and every face this time!
This exam I would like teachers and principals to click photos NOT WITH THE TOPPERS but with the students who have not done as well. Reach out not to the toppers but to the ones at the other end. Give them your encouragement and support, they need it much more.
Friends, don't be afraid of failure in exams. Grade doesn't determine who you are, what are you are capable of. Just think of Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple company, he was quitting his school but yet he had managed to be one of the biggest billionaire in the world. You may haul and boast your 4 pointer sheets everywhere but I believe when you're being interviewed to get hire, the interviewers would ask you something that beyond your expectitions, something that doesn't necessarily related to your work field, perhaps :)
